Fall Fashion Trends

It’s finally fall. Time for pumpkin everything, planning your Halloween costume, and, of course, colder weather. That means no more sweating through your tank top and shorts after walking for five minutes! Most excitingly, you can ditch the uncomfortable jean shorts and welcome sweaters back into your wardrobe!

This fall season, the trends are dating back to the 90s. Think plaid, oversized, all black outfits, eyeliner, baggy jeans, and animal print. For inspiration look to Clueless, vintage Chanel, Drew Barrymore, Winona Ryder, and the Spice Girls. Fall 2019 truly proves that it’s not a phase, mom!

Remember when I mentioned vintage Chanel? That’s because their famous usage of tweed is back! The textile has taken its modern form in blazers, mini skirts, and trench coats. Its tightly woven knit is perfect to keep you warm in the colder months. Zara has a plethora of tweed pieces in different colors and styles at a fair price. For a statement piece, pair it with something minimalistic, such as a white turtleneck and chelsea boots. Or if you’re a maximalist, go for a two piece set by pairing a tweed blazer with a tweed skirt and platform heels for the perfect “Clueless meets Chanel” inspired look.

Puff Sleeves: My personal favorite trend of the season are statement sleeves. Last year they took form in the balloon and trumpet shape. This year, however, they channel Disney princess Belle’s gown and are so flattering! They are featured on blouses, mini dresses, square-neck tops, bodysuits, and even knitwear. The sleeves are dainty and feminine and they take any simple outfit to the next level. Now they can be seen all over the fashion scene.

After two decades of continuously wearing suffocating skinny jeans, we can all finally breathe again in loose jeans. This trend encompasses mom, boyfriend, and straight leg low-rise jeans. Take the classic Levi’s 501 for example. You can style baggy jeans with sweaters and sneakers, creating a more casual, “effortless” look, or style them with a bodysuit and heeled booties, as a chic, flattering look. Typically, they look best in an acid wash, as they give off a more authentic vintage appearance. Baggy jeans can often be found in thrift stores, as they were huge in the 90’s and abandoned for years.

Hair Accessories: Take a break from the scrunchie obsession and scavenge for your old barrettes and headbands from elementary school because they’re back and chicer than ever! Your muse for this trend is Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl, as she tops off nearly every outfit with her infamous headbands or hair clips. The two feature pearls, rhinestones, velvet, and rainbow colors. Zara again has great selection for these, though they can be a little pricey. Urban Outfitters and Amazon carry them too for a more reasonable price and a larger selection. Regardless, they are so cute! I recently picked up some black rhinestone clips from Urban and I don’t have an excuse not to wear them!

Have fun living your dream of being a 90’s baby this fall and take advantage of the revival of these trends. I know I sure will!
