Spotlight on Independent Film Club

With the vast amount of clubs offered at Ridgewood High School, it’s common for some to be overlooked. Due to the large number of student organizations, many people are not aware that there are many clubs that are available to them, some of which may be of interest to them.

The Independent Film Club is a group of students who watch and discuss movies at lunch on Wednesdays in Room 208. The club has watched movies such as Capote, The Lunchbox, and The Grand Budapest Hotel, as well as various independent short films.

“We try to watch a variety of movies from a variety of genres,” says the club’s co-president Olivia Columbus. “Most recently we watched Little Miss Sunshine which, while it is entertaining, it also sheds a light some very relevant and serious social issues.”

Olivia also gave us exclusive information about the club’s next project. “We are hoping to host a student-made film festival later this year; we are currently looking for student filmmakers at the high school who are looking to submit their films,” she said.  The IFC predicts that this event will occur sometime between November 2015 and January 2016.

While dealing with the stress of high school, it can be nice to take a break and watch a movie with friends. Since not all students are able to meet after school because of sports and other various commitments, IFC meets at lunch and watches movies almost every week.

“We try to break up movies over two or three lunch periods,” Olivia says. “We always meet on Wednesdays, or sometimes Fridays if we are trying to finish a movie.”

However, it’s not a big deal to miss one meeting. “We are pretty laid back about that stuff,” Olivia shares. “We just want everyone to enjoy themselves.”

Independent Film Club meets Wednesdays at lunch in room 208. If you are interested in submitting a film for the festival, please come to a meeting or stop by room 208 for more information.
