Have NFL defenses figured out Patrick Mahomes?

Patrick Mahomes has been the face of the NFL, in just three years of starting he won an MVP and was featured in two Superbowls. The quarterback on the Kansas City Chiefs has been arguably the best quarterback in football for the past years. A quarterback of Mahomes’ caliber is extremely rare and amazing to watch. Mahomes has wowed all viewers by pulling off no look passes. The Chiefs offense has been unstoppable with help from Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. These three players are all arguably the best at their given position. Yet, what if I told you that the Chiefs were tied for last in their division and Mahomes has thrown eight interceptions.

The Chiefs struggles in this season do not come solely from their defense. In previous years, the Chiefs defense has been weak and teams were able to exploit this. However, this year the offense has not produced at all. In fact, the Chiefs scored three points against the Bills in a blowout loss. NFL fans are beginning to believe that defenses have figured out Mahomes’ game. This could be an overreaction, yet the statistics prove that Mahomes has struggled immensely recently. He has 15 interceptions in his last 15 games. Mahomes will need to pick up his play if he wants to revisit the NFL playoffs.

So, has Mahomes been figured out? This question remains unanswered. The sample size is simply too small. Some of his interceptions have been receivers’ faults. Also, one cannot forget about his success. He has proven to be capable of making unreal plays. Mahomes may not be the player people thought he would be, yet he will remain the starter for the Chiefs and try to push them towards the playoffs. Mahomes and his Chiefs will certainly be tested in the upcoming weeks. Ultimately, making a statement that broad halfway through the season is definitely an overreaction. However, Mahomes will have to prove his doubters wrong in the second half of the season.
